Survival games can think seriously about which methods of power generations are available to the player, and how they’re portrayed.

Generating electricity is a big part of surviving in Subnautica and there are many technologies that can do it. However, burning fossil fuels, or anything else for that matter, is not among them. Thousands of years into the future, apparently capitalism is alive and well but the fossil economy isn’t so much as mentioned. What’s interesting is that the carbon-neutral technologies that remain aren’t some far-fetched fantasy solutions, but rather things that exist in our world today – solar panels, composting, thermal and nuclear reactors. This choice helps make the fiction plausible while lending these present-day technologies a futuristic shine.
