Game worlds can be “transapocalyptic” – places that have collapsed, yet they still exist and they are still worth fighting for.
Good transapocalyptic narratives can help us understand how to cope with all sorts of broken worlds. One powerful example is Final Fantasy VI, the latter half of which takes place in the “World of Ruin” where catastrophe has befallen the planet and nothing will ever be the same. This forces each of the 14 protagonists to assess what is still worth fighting for in a broken world, knowing they will never recover what they lost.
Set in a future that sees more than its share of harsh climate impacts, Signs of the Sojourner revels in portraying people who are coping, drawing strength from each other and finding joy in post-apocalyptic life.
